TUBAN REGENCY, August 27, 2023 – Education is one of the fundamental pillars of a nation’s development. In order to continuously enhance the quality of education in Indonesia, various innovations and updates need to be continually pursued. One critical aspect of education is the enhancement of teacher competencies, especially in foreign language instruction such as Arabic.
In response to this challenge, a team of practitioners consisting of academics and students from various universities joined forces in a community engagement project aimed at improving the quality of high school Arabic language teachers in Tuban Regency. The project focuses on training in the development of a Learning Management System (LMS) based on Self-Directed Learning (SDL) for Arabic language teachers.
Leading this team is Dr. Moch. Wahib Dariyadi, M.Pd, an academician with experience in the field of education and curriculum development. Other team members include Dr. Mohammad Ahsanuddin, S.Pd, M.Pd, who specializes in Arabic language education, Dr. Ibnu Samsul Huda, M.A, an expert in Arabic language and literature, and Ali Ma’sum, MA, who also possesses expertise in Arabic language and literature.
The project also involves the contributions of students, Tsania Khoirunnisa and Rifka Laiyinatus Sifah. The collaboration between academics and students not only benefits the enhancement of teacher competencies but also empowers students to contribute to educational development.
A crucial partner in this project is Mohammad Muhlisin, Mufa, M.PdI, representing the Ministry of Religious Affairs of Tuban Regency. This collaboration is essential to ensure that the conducted training aligns with the needs and curriculum standards in place.
The outcomes of this project are diverse and comprehensive. Apart from enhancing teacher competencies in utilizing technology in instruction, the project’s mandatory outputs include mass media publications, scholarly article presentations, ISBN Book Chapters, and intellectual property protection (IPR). These outputs reflect the dedication of the practitioners’ team in sharing their knowledge and research results with the wider community.
The project introduction underscores the urgency of media usage in education. Media not only aids teachers in conveying materials more effectively but also enhances the appeal of subject matter to students. The introduction of technology in education is highly relevant considering the era of the fourth industrial revolution. Hence, the development of a Learning Management System (LMS) becomes a suitable solution to integrate technology into education.
In the context of Arabic language education, specific challenges are faced, particularly with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote learning policies have brought forth various challenges, including limited internet access and students’ low comprehension of Arabic language. The use of platforms like WhatsApp for remote learning also presents limitations in teacher-student interaction.
Thus, this project serves as a concrete solution to address these issues. The Self-Directed Learning (SDL)-based Learning Management System (LMS) provides teachers and students with better access to instructional materials and encourages independent learning. This technology also helps overcome barriers in remote learning, such as the lack of interaction between teachers and students.
The detailed methods of implementation in this project are comprehensive. By involving various methods such as lectures, Q&A sessions, micro-teaching, consultations, mentoring, and guidance, the training is designed to provide theoretical and practical understanding to Arabic language teachers. Through various training materials such as LMS development, content development, visual and animation media development, and digital Arabic language game development, teachers are expected to effectively and innovatively integrate technology into instruction.
In the upcoming phases, the project is scheduled to take place in September. The training will incorporate various designed methods. Furthermore, the practitioner’s team has prepared project outputs, including mass media publications, article presentations, Book Chapters, and IPR protection. This demonstrates the team’s commitment to sharing research results and knowledge with the broader community.
In a constantly changing world, education must keep up with the times. This project not only constitutes a significant step in enhancing teacher competencies but also serves as a tangible example of how collaboration among academics, students, and external partners can yield innovative solutions in the education sector. It is hoped that this project will have a positive impact on Arabic language education in high schools in Tuban Regency and also inspire similar efforts in various regions.
